Angie Wojak, director of career development, was part of the SVA contingent who traveled to San Francisco recently to provide industry outreach to potential employers and host an SVA alumni reception. She shares this recap of the week’s exciting series of meetings and events.
An SVA team comprised of members of the College’s Alumni Affairs office; the BFA Computer Art, Computer Animation and Visual Effects Department; the MFA Computer Art Department; the Office of External Relations; and Career Development office traveled to San Francisco during the week of November 11. Staff and faculty met with animation, design, film, and technology industry professionals, alumni and recruiters to foster relationships and gather information on industry hiring trends. Among the companies visited were Apple, Autodesk, DreamWorks, Facebook, IDEO, Industrial Light and Magic, Phil Tippett Studio, Pixar and Sony PlayStation. SVA also hosted an industry and alumni reception at Yoshi’s on November 13.
A highlight of the trip was the group’s visit to Pixar. SVA hosted a luncheon for several alumni who work at Pixar and learned about their work on recent projects such as the highly successfully Monsters University. The SVA team then toured the Pixar campus and met with recruiters and animation managers to discuss the studio’s internship program. Pixar will be visiting SVA in spring 2014 for an on-campus presentation about their work and will meet with students to discuss the internship program and see student work.
The SVA team also traveled to DreamWorks and toured the studio with the university relations manager. The group learned about DreamWorks’ upcoming projects and enjoyed a cross-site video conference meeting with SVA alumni working in DreamWorks San Francisco and Los Angeles offices. Alumni shared information on their work process, projects and the process by which they found their positions. In spring 2014, SVA will host a Q&A video conference featuring SVA alumni at DreamWorks who will speak with students about their careers and views on the industry.
Autodesk hosted the SVA group for a day filled with presentations on the company’s technology and educational initiatives. These events allowed the SVA team to learn from Autodesk designers and educational programming managers about new trends and technological developments that SVA alumni, faculty and students should be aware of. The team then toured Autodesk’s Pier 9 Workshop which features a 3D printing lab, woodworking, and metal shop.
At the SVA industry and alumni reception at Yoshi’s, guests enjoyed jazz music while catching up with former classmates. In addition to alumni, also present were representatives from Apple and Samsung’s recruiting teams. The reception was an exciting opportunity to connect SVA’s talented alumni with their fellow graduates.
