MPS Live Action Short Film Department Chair and Advertising Hall of Fame member Bob Giraldi has directed a new short film called A Poet Long Ago, which made its debut recently at the SVA Theatre. Written by renowned journalist and author Pete Hamill (Tabloid City and A Killing for Christ, among many others), the film is inspired by Hamill’s grammar school days as budding writer and stars Steve Schirripa (The Sopranos) and Boris McGiver (Lincoln, The Wire).
Set in both present-day and 1970s Brooklyn, A Poet Long Ago jumps between the main character’s current life as a sanitation worker and his childhood with his violent, narrow-minded father, who beats his son’s love of poetry out of him in attempt to protect the boy from ridicule. A reflection on the convergence of past and present in a time when talent and circumstances equally informed life trajectories, A Poet Long Ago offers an intimate window into the life of a man haunted by his own natural ability.
A Poet Long Ago is currently being entered into major film festivals worldwide. For more information and updates, visit apoetlongago.com.
