Current MFA Illustration as Visual Essay student Andrea Tsurumi recently won a Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA) Award for Excellence, recognizing outstanding work on display at this year’s MoCCA Arts Festival. Tsurumi’s book, Andrew Jackson Throws a Punch, imagines the hot temper of America’s seventh president clashing with the pageantry and largess of his out-of-control inaugural party.
Judges for the MoCCA competition included leading illustrators Karen Berger, Gary Groth, Nora Krug (MFA 2004 Illustration as Visual Essay), David Mazzuchelli, and Paul Pope. The works recognized as outstanding by the jury will be acquired by Columbia University’s Rare Book and Manuscript Library for the newly-established MoCCA Arts Festival collection, and the winners will have their works exhibited in the second floor MoCCA gallery at the Society of Illustrators from May 21 – July 6.
