SVA Alumni Make 2013 PDN’s 30 Issue

March 5, 2013

Award winning industry magazine Photo District News (PDN) recently announced its list of up-and-coming photographers to watch for 2013, including four SVA alumni. Ian Allen’s (BFA 2005 Graphic Design) ease with moving quickly between landscapes and interiors; Bon Duke’s (MPS 2012 Fashion Photogrpahy) consideration of fashion as a key visual component to photography; Lisa Elmaleh’s (BFA 2007 Photography) love of old-fashioned photographic processes; and John Francis Peters’s (BFA 2002 Graphic Design) awe at the dramatic landscapes of foreign lands were among the artistic sensibilities that won over the judges this year.

Industry professionals nominated more than 300 photographers for the competition. PDN’s editors then selected 30 outstanding portfolios and recognized the photographers by publishing their work in the latest PDN’s 30 issue. The 2013 photographers to watch contest revealed a crop of strong, self-assured artists, all willing to pursue their craft no matter the cost. “Whether their confidence was built over time or nurtured in them by family members, mentors or friends, each of these photographers has looked inward in order to create work that means something to them,” senior editor Conor Risch reflected on PDN’s website. “In the process they’ve inspired us to recognize their work and the force of the personality behind it.”
