Allan Chochinov Represents SVA at the Winterhouse Symposium at Yale

December 10, 2012

MFA Products of Design Department Chair Allan Chochinov represented SVA at this year’s Winterhouse Symposium on Design Education and Social Change held at Yale University. Innovators from various disciplines including design, engineering and architecture traveled from around the country to share ideas about the future of design education for social impact, all centered around the theme of “action.”

One session explored the challenges and opportunities of developing social design and innovation programs within educational institutions. Chochinov added his ideas on ways to drive organizational change saying, “designers are the ‘connective tissue’ of an institution because they are conversant with the needs and language of so many different stakeholders.” The conversations advanced to explore student trajectory and retention in the field and ways the group could serve the larger social innovation community in academia. The participants will continue their course of action through working groups focused on the categories of careers, infrastructure, metrics and publishing.
