Internationally acclaimed artist James McMullan, best known for his signature posters created for the Lincoln Center Theater, has teamed up with the United States Postal Service (USPS ) to pay tribute to some of the dance world’s biggest legends. On July 28, National Dance Day, the USPS is set to release the Innovative Choreographers Forever® stamps series, which feature McMullan’s exquisite drawings of Isadora Duncan, Katherine Dunham, Bob Fosse and José Limón. “The basic idea was to make the stamps about movement,” McMullan recently told Beyond the Perf. “I wanted to represent the personality of the kind of dance that these choreographers made.”
McMullan will also be honored by SVA this fall with a Masters Series award and retrospective exhibition of his work (at the SVA Gallery, November 21 – December 15). The Masters Series, instituted by SVA founder Silas H. Rhodes in 1988, is intended to bring greater exposure to those whose influence has been felt strongly and by many, yet without widespread recognition. Past Masters Series laureates include Jules Feiffer, Milton Glaser, April Greiman, Paula Scher, and Edward Sorel.
