Dustin Grella (MFA 2009 Computer Art) has been selected to contribute an animation that will be part of a feature film shown at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival on May 18 at 7pm. Grella was contacted by James Kenney, a producer at Real Ideas Studio, to be involved with a yet untitled feature film that will be composed of shorts by 11 different filmmakers. The theme of the overall film is “the other,” which Grella describes as situations or stories in which someone is outside of what is considered normal. “Once I got my head around it, the concept was very simple,” Grella said, “because we all have felt like an outsider or have dealt with the outsider at so many points in our lives.”
Grella is using his Animation Hotline Project website to put together the piece. He started the project about a year ago as a way to gather fresh ideas for content based on voice messages left by visitors and has generated approximately 85 animations from them so far. He is currently looking for messages that follow the theme of “the other.” For more information about his project or to contribute a message, visit the Animation Hotline Project.
