One SVA faculty member and one alumnus are featured in February’s issue of ARTnews. Maira Kalman is on the MFA Design Department faculty and is profiled by Hilarie M. Sheets, who describes Kalman’s illustrations from her U.S. road trips, recently compiled in And the Pursuit of Happiness (Penguin Press, 2010). Sheets explains the artist’s interest in the “visionary” Abraham Lincoln and how she acquired an appreciation for the complicated machinations of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate.
The same issue has an article on cake and its depiction in art, in which Nicole J. Caruth discusses the work of alumnus Dustin Wayne Harris (BFA 2007 Photography). Detailing his photography series Cake Mixx, Caruth relates how Harris photographed cakes he asked women he went on dates with to make for him. Harris says, “I did the project because cakes are so visually interesting. They reflect the person who made them.”
