The Barnett Newman Foundation was established in 1979 by the artist’s widow, Annalee Newman, in order to promote the study and understanding of Barnett Newman’s life and works. The award is a substantial grant to recognize and encourage creative contributions in the arts. It is given every few years to artists whose work best embodies Newman’s rigorous and independent ethos; previous recipients include Rebecca Horn (2004), Judy Pfaff (2006) and Larry Poons (2010).
