On Thursday, January 6, the BFA Fine Arts Department invited schoolchildren from the 92nd Street Y’s after-school program to its printmaking facilities for a hands-on demonstration of letterpress printing. Faculty member Dikko Faust showed the group of students, who ranged in age from 9 to 14 years old, an array of letterpress items and explained the history of the printing technique. Next, he demonstrated the process and had the children use the SVA letterpress equipment to create 2 x 3 1/2-inch cards bearing their names.
“I thought this was a good opportunity to get the word out about letterpress at SVA,” said Faust of the two-hour demonstration and workshop. Faust is the founder of Purgatory Pie Press and teaches letterpress courses in the BFA Fine Arts Department and the Division of Continuing Education.
