As the news media turned their attention to the recent five-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the NBC Nightly News focused on a project involving alumnus Shadra Strickland (MFA 2005 Illustration as Visual Essay). She provided the illustrations for A Place Where Hurricanes Happen (Random House, 2010), written by Renée Watson following a series of 2006 workshops with children in New Orleans. Those interactions with children affected by the storm informed the book’s story about a group of young friends who live on the same street in New Orleans and are separated when they are forced to evacuate the city.
The piece aired on Tuesday, August 28, and prominently features Strickland’s artwork. A Place Where Hurricanes Happen is also earning positive notices from bloggers, including Color Online and Seven Impossible Things Before Breakfast.
