In conjunction with his new exhibition at Gagosian Gallery, photographer Roger Ballen will give a free public lecture at the SVA Theatre, 333 West 23rd Street, on Monday, November 9, 7pm. Ballen’s black-and-white series Boarding House explores a three-story warehouse hidden among the gold mines in Johannesburg, South Africa and inhabited by disenfranchised, impoverished families and fugitives. Ballen has lived and worked in Johannesburg for almost 30 years, and he worked as a geologist and mining consultant before beginning his photographic career documenting rural villages. The photographer will speak with editor and publisher Darius Himes, who has contributed to Aperture, Blind Spot, Bookforum, BOMB, PDN and American Photo. The lecture is presented by the BFA Photography Department and Dear Dave, magazine.
