Over the summer, several members of the SVA community are crossing the Atlantic for exhibitions of their work in Europe. The first stop is Germany, where two shows are taking place: Berlin’s Medizinhistorisches Museum is presenting “The Glass Veil,” a new site-specific installation by BFA Fine Arts Department Chair Suzanne Anker. The piece, which will run through Sunday, September 6, pays tribute to the medical history and the building’s destruction in World War II, enclosing in glass several small parachutes and photos of medical specimens. And in Vienna, alumnus Amy Elkins (BFA 2006 Photography) is one of the artists featured in “The Portrait: Photography as a Stage,” an examination of photographic portraiture, on view at the Kunsthalle Wein through Sunday, October 18.
Traveling to the UK, alumnus Elizabeth Peyton (1987 Fine Arts) will have more than 60 of her paintings on display in “Live Forever: Elizabeth Peyton” at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London through Sunday, September 20. The works collected range from prints and drawings to still-lifes and portraits of artists, musicians and historical figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte, Jarvis Cocker, Frida Kahlo and more.
