Work by alumni from the BFA Photography Department is headed overseas for an exhibition at the Galleria San Ludovico in Parma, Italy. “Identity Identities” includes work by 11 photographers examining the relationship between individual and collective identity. Organized by SVA and curated by Department Chair Stephen Frailey, the show is the second in a two-part exhibition; the first took place in fall 2008 at the Visual Arts Gallery and featured nine Italian photographers’ explorations of the same theme. “Identity Identities” runs March 21 – April 26; view a slide show of images on the SVA News page.
One of the exhibiting artists, Victoria Hely-Hutchinson, was just included in PDN’s 30, a selection of 30 “new and emerging photographers to watch” in the March 2009 issue of Photo District News. The magazine highlights her Public School series, comprised of photographs documenting life in exclusive, British boarding schools. The series allows Hely-Hutchinson to explore part of her own identity, since both she and her family have attended these prestigious institutions. Images from Public School will be on display in “Identity Identities.”
