People and Places

March 25, 2009

Three new exhibitions of photography in New York City are showcasing work by alumni of the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department. Shen Wei (2006) is showing a collection of works from his ongoing portrait series Almost Naked at Brooklyn’s Randall Scott Gallery, 111 Front Street, #204. The physically and emotionally revealing photographs, which Wei says grew out of his conservative upbringing in China and subsequent move to the U.S., will be on view April 2 – May 2, with an opening reception for the artist on Thursday, April 2, 6 – 8pm.

Another series based on a sense of place comes from Matthew Pillsbury (2004), whose “An American in the City of Light” is running at the French Institute: Alliance Française (FIAF), 22 East 60th Street, through Saturday, April 18. Representing FIAF’s first commissioned exhibition, the show collects black-and-white images of Paris shot by Pillsbury, an American who was raised in France.

Finally, alumnus Erin Gleeson (2007) is hosting the Photo Booth Salon, a party/exhibition taking place on Friday, April 3, 9 – 11pm, at 530 West 28th Street. Gleeson’s Salon will feature work by 18 emerging photographers, along with an on-site photo booth so that guests can add their images to the mix. Several of Gleeson’s fellow SVA photographers are showing their work as part of the event: Vanessa Bahmani (current student), Rachel Barrett (2008), Matt Baum (2007), Jade Doskow (2008), Dina Kantor (2007), Miles Kerr (2007), Seth Lambert (2007), Kelly Neal (2007), Emmely Pierre-Louis (2007), Tiana Peterson (2007) and Elizabeth White (2007). Attendees should RSVP to photoboothsalon@gmail.com.
