Artist and teacher Katie Yamasaki (MFA 2003 Illustration as Visual Essay) is part of the Groundswell Community Mural Project’s program for young women, Voices Her’d, which brought together more than a dozen female artists to create an original mural in Yamasaki’s Brooklyn neighborhood, Sunset Park. The mural went up over the course of several weeks this summer, and was officially dedicated by the Groundswell organization in early September.
The three-story mural, which can be seen from the BQE highway, is titled Informed, Empowered and addresses challenges faced by women in the military. As part of the creation of the work, the group interviewed local veterans and researched statistics about military recruitment and the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. Yamasaki and several of the artists who worked on the mural will be taking part in a panel discussion about the project on Saturday, September 27, 2 – 4pm, at the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, 200 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn; for more information, visit groundswellmural.org.
