A new children’s book is just out from recent alumnus Tao Nyeu (MFA 2007 Illustration as Visual Essay). Wonder Bear (Dial) tells the story of two kids who plant mysterious seeds that end up blossoming into a full-grown white bear wearing a top hat. The bear uses the hat to pull out more surprises (and other magical animals) to amuse the children. Nyeu renders the fantastical tale in silkscreen with water-based ink, creating a colorfully striking fantasy world.
Also, alumnus Sara Voron (MFA 2002 Illustration as Visual Essay) recently got a nod from a formidable source. Her book of wordless illustrations, Robot Dreams (First Second, 2007), was selected by Oprah Winfrey for inclusion on her Book Club Kids Reading List. Winfrey recommended the book for the 6 – 9 year-old age group; read the complete list here.
