Print magazine has been selecting its New Visual Artists (NVA) lists for each of the last 10 years, and along with this year’s list, Print takes a look at the full decade of NVA groups. SVA comes out on top, having produced 36 winning artists, more than any other educational institution and over twice as many as the second-place college. In the 2008 competition, two more members of the SVA community are included: designer Ian Allen (2005 Graphic Design) and illustrator Elena Wen (BFA 2003 Illustration). The full NVA feature is in Print’s April issue and online here.
Another annual list of art world up-and-comers comes from Photo District News (PDN) magazine, which selects 30 emerging talents in the photographic field and profiles them under the rubric PDN’s 30. Recent SVA graduates are typically featured on the list, and the 2008 edition is no exception. Katie Kingma (BFA 2005 Photography) and Domingo Milella (BFA 2005 Photography) are two of this year’s 30, and each has a page of work in the March issue of the magazine. The accompanying text notes the filmic nature of Kingma’s photography, citing echoes of Alfred Hitchcock and Michel Gondry in her work. In Milella’s profile, he describes his landscape photography of worldwide border regions as recordings of, “the geography of the edge.”
