Bonnie Yochelson, a member of the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department faculty, has co-written a new book, Rediscovering Jacob Riis: Exposure Journalism and Photography in Turn-of-the-Century New York (New Press, 2008). Working with historian Daniel Czitrom, Yochelson examines the legacy of Jacob Riis, a photojournalist who used his medium to arouse a public discourse on social topics such as urban poverty and the rights of immigrants. Pairing thoroughly researched text with 95 of Riis’ black-and-white photographs, Rediscovering Jacob Riis gives readers the opportunity to understand the life and work of this pioneering photographer.
Another photo-centered publication that’s new on shelves is the latest issue of Dear Dave, a magazine of photography and writing created by BFA Photography Department Chair Stephen Frailey. Issue #2 features work by Jason Noyes (BFA 2007 Photography), Brian Finke (BFA 1998 Photography) and others. For more information, visit www.deardavemagazine.com.
