Polish-born painter Joanna Wezyk isn’t due to receive her MFA in fine arts from SVA until May, but she already has a solo exhibition at Tina Kim Gallery in Chelsea, 545 West 25th Street, 3rd floor, through Saturday, March 8. The self-titled show features paintings of abandoned gothic cathedrals and churches. While these spaces are generally suffused in darkness, Wezyk seeks out light and the resulting chiaroscuros are dynamic studies in color and form. Born and raised in Krakow, Poland, Wezyk gravitated to this visual subject after finding solace from the realities of 1980s Poland inside such sacred spaces.
