Starting in 1932, the Whitney Museum of American Art has presented its Biennial as a way of surveying the contemporary art-world landscape. The museum dedicates the majority of its exhibition space to this signature event, inviting both emerging and established artists to present work that provokes responses across the board. Four members of the SVA community have been selected to be a part of the 2008 Biennial: alumni Mika Rottenberg (BFA 2001 Fine Arts)and Phoebe Washburn (MFA 2002 Fine Arts), and faculty members Fia Backström (BFA Photography Department) and Mary Heilmann (BFA Fine Arts Department).
This is the 74th edition of the Biennial, and will take place March 6 – June 1, 2008, at 945 Madison Avenue. In addition, the Whitney is collaborating with the Park Avenue Armory and the Art Production Fund to provide the Biennial with a second venue in the historic Seventh Regiment Armory building, at Park Avenue and 67th Street. The Armory will be the setting for a series of performances, temporary installations, events and other public programs by Biennial artists from March 4 – 22. The exhibition is curated by Henriette Huldisch, assistant curator at the Whitney; and Shamim M. Momin, associate curator at the Whitney and branch director and curator of the Whitney Museum at Altria; and overseen by Donna De Salvo, the Whitney’s chief curator and associate director for programs.
