SVA’s Amphitheater, at 209 East 23rd Street, 3rd floor, is the site for two upcoming panel discussions. First up on Tuesday, October 30, 7pm, is Universal Studios: Tracking the Art School in a Globalized World, an international discussion of art education in the era of globalization, with Suzanne Anker, chair, SVA’s BFA Fine Arts Department; Michael Archer, Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, University of Oxford, UK; Shelley Rice, Department of Fine Arts, NYU; Miriam van Rijsingen, Department of Art History, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands; and Raphael Rubinstein, SVA faculty member and senior editor, Art in America.
The next panel, on Thursday, November 1, 7pm, is The Art of War, in which Iraq veterans who have written about their wartime experiences will take part in a public symposium presented by Camillo “Mac” Bica, a faculty member in the Humanities and Sciences Department. Veterans of the Vietnam War and World War II will read from Post-Traumatic Press, a recently-published chapbook of poems, and the keynote speaker will be artist and alumnus Steve Mumford (MFA 1994 Fine Arts), whose Baghdad Journal: An Artist in Occupied Iraq (Drawn and Quarterly) features his watercolors and ink drawings from the front lines. Both of these events are free and open to the public.
