Two alumni have new books out that are worth perusing. The Surfer Spirit (Bess Press), co-written by Cynthia Derosier (BFA 1988 Advertising) and Tim Anderson, takes a look at both the physical and inner worlds of surfers. Hawaiian resident Derosier pairs original, poetic text with photographs that put the reader right on the island state’s big waves. The book also serves as the inspiration for The Surfrider Spirit Sessions, a 12-week series for at-risk teens that combines surfing lessons and water-safety instruction with a self-awareness program led by therapists and counselors. For the younger set, alumnus Michael Townsend (BFA 2004 Cartooning) has just published his debut children’s book, Billy Tartle in Say Cheese! (Knopf). The book follows the titular character’s efforts to make school-picture day memorable, starting with a self-administered haircut inspired by his favorite cartoon character, Supermonkey. Each of Billy’s schemes goes a bit awry, depicted in Townsend’s colorfully amusing illustrations.
