To Tell the Truth: The Liu Binyan Story—the thesis project by alumnus Meggie Miao (MFA 2006 Photography, Video and Related Media)—has been picked up for distribution by The
Cinema Guild, a leading distributor of foreign, independent and documentary films. Binyan, a leading Chinese journalist, sought out the truth his whole life and paid a huge price for that honesty, with the Chinese government banning him from returning to the country after he came to the U.S. to teach (Binyan died in 2005 of cancer).
Often referred to as “the Conscience of China,” Binyan was named one of Time magazine’s Asian Heroes in 2003. He published articles critical of Chinese corruption for the Hong Kong media, and offered commentary for the U.S. government-funded Radio Free Asia. Through interviews and archival footage, Miao’s film documents Binyan’s story and his struggle to build a freer China.
