Viewers of MTV’s live call-in show Total Request Live (TRL) have been getting brief doses of art-world action in a segment called Art Battles. On May 4, BFA Fine Arts Department student Megan Whitman was one of a dozen young artists chosen to come to Times Square and compete in a live challenge: each artist had to create an original 3×5-foot painting, in just 90 minutes, that made prominent use of the MTV logo. TRL viewers then voted for their favorites, and Whitman remained as one of the eight contestants to stay on the program.
This week, Art Battles is moving into its final round. On Monday, June 4, MTV will launch the show’s Web site, featuring bios and work from each of the artists, and will invite the public to vote for their favorites. The following Monday at 3:30pm, Whitman and her fellow contestants will be guests in the TRL studio for a live announcement of the winner. To see the painting Whitman created for the show, visit her Web site, www.meganmwhitman.com, and click on “Paintings”; you can cast votes at www.artbattles.com through Friday, June 8.
