BFA Illustration and Cartooning Department faculty member Ben Katchor is part of an unusual new project. The Carbon Copy Building (Cantaloupe Music) is a limited-edition CD/comic book that finds Katchor collaborating with Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe, the co-artistic directors of the modern classical music group Bang on a Can. Based on an award-winning live show from 2000, the 48-page comic and CD mix the dark, witty humor of Katchor’s illustrated libretto with Bang on a Can’s operatic compositions. The Carbon Copy Building can be ordered directly through the Cantaloupe Music Web site.
Another illustration project currently on display is “Children’s Book Illustrations,” an exhibition of drawings by Ansel Pitcairn (MFA Illustration 1992). Part of the “Art Wall on Third” series at the Mid-Manhattan Library, 40th Street at 5th Avenue, the exhibition will feature Pitcairn’s illustrations from the books Portraits of African-American Heroes (Puffin) and Aisha’s Crowning Glory, through Saturday, April 14.
