Commuter Cartoons

October 13, 2006

New York City-area commuters have grown accustomed to the recent appearance of free morning newspapers available outside of train and bus stops. One such paper, Metro New York, recently hired BFA Illustration and Cartooning Department faculty member Tom Hart to provide a regular cartoon to readers. Hutch Owen is an original creation featuring the funny (and usually angry) title character, who was described by Time magazine as “the anti-Pillsbury Dough Boy. Punch his tummy and he’ll punch you back.” In addition to the regular comic strip, Hart has published two books of Hutch strips—The Collected Hutch Owen and Hutch Owen: Unmarketable (both through Top Shelf)—along with Pitch Unger, a series created for a publisher in Japan.
