Thomas Woodruff, chair of SVA’s BFA Illustration and Cartooning Department, has an unusual new book out. Thomas Woodruff’s Freak Parade (Hardy Marks Publications) is a collection of paintings that depict a parade of 34 elaborately embellished characters on large-format (10×15”) pages. Each page in Freak Parade pairs poetic text with a macabre, ornate and unexpected freak. The bizarre subject matter is perhaps best summed up by Woodruff at the start of the book: “This book is dedicated to all those irregulars in shape or spirit – you know who you are.”
To mark the publication of Freak Parade, Illinois State University, in Normal, IL, is hosting an exhibition of the book’s original artwork, September 26 – November 5, at its Center for the Visual Arts. There will be an opening reception on Tuesday, September 26, 5 – 7pm, and a slide lecture by Woodruff on Wednesday, September 27, 12 noon, in the University Galleries.
