Alumnus David B. Levy (BFA 1995 Animation) has just written a new book, Your Career in Animation: How to Survive and Thrive, which was co-published by SVA and Allworth Press. Levy interviewed top pros in the animation industry, including Steven Hillenburg, creator of SpongeBob SquarePants; Al Brodax, producer of Yellow Submarine; Teddy Newton, character designer on The Incredibles; SVA instructor Howard Beckerman; and fellow alumni Jean Pierre Dillard (BFA 1998 Media Arts), John R. Dilworth (BFA 1985 Animation) and Yvette Kaplan (BFA 1976 Animation) to get their insights on creating a portfolio or reel, meeting animators, networking and making the leap from working for others to pitching and selling your own work. The author also provides his own expertise, honed by his work as an animator for HBO, MTV, NBC’s Saturday Night Live and Nickelodeon’s Blue’s Clues.
Another new animation-industry book features work from two alumni: Daisuke Tsutsumi (BFA 1998 Illustration) and Vince Nguyen (BFA 1999 Illustration) are both contributors to Out of Picture (Paquet), a collection of illustrations by artists from animation house Blue Sky Studios (Ice Age, Robots). There will be a launch party for the book on Friday, June 16, 7 – 11pm, at the Society of Illustrators, 128 East 63rd Street.
