For the second year in a row, undergraduate and graduate students from SVA will collaborate with students from the Clinton Middle School for Writers and Artists in Chelsea as part of More Art’s “Art Creates Communities” project. According to More Art founder and project curator Micaela Martegani (faculty, Art History Department), she puts SVA students together with young artists in an effort to, “make contemporary art more accessible to people with little access and familiarity. We work with disadvantaged teenagers who live in Chelsea and are surrounded by art, but they never set foot in a gallery. There’s a huge gap between these worlds, even though they’re only a block apart.”
There will be a Spring Benefit for the organization on Thursday, April 27, at the Clinton School, 320 West 20th Street. The event will feature an art auction, which will include works by SVA alumni Tim Rollins (faculty, and BFA 1977 Fine Arts) and Gary Simmons (BFA 1988 Fine Arts); multimedia dance performances by Young Dance Collective and LightCurve Dance; and the presentation of an award to pioneering performance artist Marina Abramovic.
