On Monday, November 7, award-winning film director Oliver Stone visited the SVA campus. The BFA Film, Video and Animation Department hosted Stone in the Amphitheater, where department chair Reeves Lehmann conducted a Q&A session in front of a capacity crowd.
The session began with a 10-minute collection of clips from some of the director’s best-known films, including Platoon and Natural Born Killers, and then moved into a discussion about the craft of screenwriting (“The process of writing goes to the deepest part of yourself”), the art of directing (“I try to ask the right question, not give the right answer”) and the new 9/11-themed film that Stone is currently making (“I’m not a political filmmaker; I think of myself as a dramatist first”). After concluding the interview, Lehmann opened the floor to questions, and several students took the opportunity to get advice and insight from the industry vet on how to break into the business and what to look for when casting actors. Stone is the latest star the department has brought to SVA as part of its long-running series of celebrity Q&As.
