On Tuesday, September 13, The Alumni Society of SVA held its inaugural art auction to raise funds for student scholarships. Over 100 donated works of art were up for bid in the well-attended live and silent auctions at the Visual Arts Gallery. The Alumni Society also bestowed a trio of honors: Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn received an Honorary Alumni Award for her work mentoring BFA Photography Department students; and Joseph Kosuth (1967 Fine Arts) and Tim Rollins (faculty, and BFA 1977 Fine Arts) each received a Distinguished Alumni Award, recognizing their ongoing dedication to the College.
By the end of the gala evening, 80 pieces were purchased, with the highest auction bid price, $45,000, going for an original wall drawing by Sol LeWitt (G 1953 Illustration). While final tallies are still being calculated, the auction is on track to raise approximately $100,000 for student scholarships. According to Joseph Tuohy, executive director of The Alumni Society, “The generosity of both the artists and bidders went beyond any of our expectations. Many SVA students will benefit from that generosity, and we’re already looking forward to future auctions.”
