The BFA Fine Arts and Art History Departments are getting ready for the 2005–06 academic year with some significant new appointments. Suzanne Anker, an established artist who has served as chair of the Art History Department since 2000, is the newly appointed chair of the BFA Fine Arts Department. Anker succeeds Jeanne Siegel, who held the position for 29 years and will continue to be associated with the College as chair emeritus. Siegel’s tenure was distinguished by curricular innovations and greater collaboration between the art history and fine arts faculties. As SVA’s first chair emeritus, Siegel will be chiefly responsible for supervising and curating fine arts exhibitions. “I’m very pleased to be on board as chair of the department,” says Anker, who notes, “These are very big shoes to fill. Jeanne has been the creative force in both fine arts and art history for many years.”
With Anker in her new role, the Art History Department is now chaired by Dr. Tom Huhn, who first came to SVA as part of the undergraduate honors program faculty and will also be a member of the new MFA Art Criticism and Writing Department’s faculty. A widely published writer and philosopher, Huhn has known Anker for many years and says he’s looking forward to working with her. “I think she’s a dynamic innovator,” he says of Anker, “and I look forward to learning about the Art History Department from her, and to working with her to see where art history can be further synchronized with SVA’s other programs and departments.”
