A Well-Designed Sweep

February 18, 2005

The 2005 Grammy Award winners were announced on Sunday, February 13, and artists from the MFA Design Department swept the packaging categories. Peter Buchanan-Smith (MFA 2000 Design) won Best Recording Package for his art direction of A Ghost Is Born, the 2004 album by rock band Wilco. The other design Grammy, for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package, went to faculty member Stefan Sagmeister, who was art director on Once in a Lifetime, a multi-disc set of music and video that is a career retrospective of art-rockers Talking Heads. This is the second year in a row that an SVA artist has won the boxed-set design award; the 2004 Grammy went to Julian Alexander (BFA 1998 Graphic Design) for Miles Davis’ The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions.
