On Friday, December 3, “Exquisite Corpse: Three Solo Shows from the MFA Illustration Program” opens in the Visual Arts Gallery, 601 West 26th Street, Suite 1502. This unique presentation features illustration, painting and video by Nora Krug, Reuben Negrón and Sam Weber. The curators are David Sandlin and Marshall Arisman.

The exhibition is named after a parlor game played by André Breton and his Surrealist gang to break free from the constraints of rational thought. Players collaborated to make a sentence of a drawing, each person adding to a sheet of paper that was then folded over to keep the others from knowing what came before. Here, the solo shows from the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay Department feature three distinct voices that overlap in the area of storytelling. The solo shows are not a collaborative effort but rather an attempt at exploring approaches to storytelling. The exhibition remains on view through Saturday, December 18, with a reception for the artists on Tuesday, December 7, 6 – 8pm.
