On Monday, November 15, the MFA Design Department celebrated the fifth anniversary of its first graduating class with a gathering of students past and present, faculty and friends of the department in the Visual Arts Gallery in Chelsea. The event is part of a yearlong anniversary celebration, which has also included a feature in Step Inside Design magazine and publication of a collection of alumni work.
Department Co-Chairs Steven Heller and Lita Talarico got everyone in a festive mood by providing custom-designed buttons for each class year, plus separate buttons for department faculty and other attendees. The partygoers, who had come from as far as Oregon and Holland to meet up with their former classmates and instructors, had a reunion among the iconoclastic design work by faculty member Stefan Sagmeister, whose first New York retrospective, “Sagmeister: Made You Look,” is on view in the gallery. Talarico, addressing the upbeat crowd, remarked, “Watching you work and seeing you meet the many challenges we throw at you is one of the greatest satisfactions I could have. Seeing that you have gone beyond even your own expectations is sublime.”
