The 2004 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship winners have just been announced, and a trio of SVA artists is among the 185 fellows: Neil Berger (1972), Jenny Dubnau (1986) and Clara Williams (BFA Fine Arts 1995). The foundation offers fellowships that allow artists and scholars to engage in creation in any of the arts or to do research in any field of knowledge. Berger, Dubnau and Williams were selected for this honor from a pool of over 3,000 applicants.
In other fellowship news, graphic design instructor Paul Shaw has just been awarded a Limited Edition Club Fellowship by the University of Texas at Austin’s Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center. From June 2004 through August 2005, Shaw will be continuing research on the life and work of W.A. Dwiggins, a noted American book and type designer who is the topic of a book Shaw is writing. Shaw teaches History of Graphic Design and History of Typographic Design at SVA.
