In the autumn of 2002, third-year BFA Photography student Masood Kamandy traveled to Afghanistan with Global Exchange, an international human-rights organization. While visiting Kabul University, Kamandy noted that the art department was, after a succession of wars and occupations, in desperate need of help to rebuild its various programs. After describing the state of the University’s photography program to Stephen Frailey, chair of the BFA Photography Department, Frailey decided there was something he could do about it. He decided to take action by organizing a photography auction, to be hosted by Christie’s auction house on October 16. The auction will feature work donated by more than 50 photographers, including Frailey and Kamandy. Proceeds will go toward purchasing equipment to endow a photography facility at Kabul University, which will be supplemented by a visiting faculty of American photographers. The reception, viewing and silent auction begins at 6:30pm and the live auction begins at 8:30pm. Tickets are $125 and $250. Please call 212.924.3805 to order tickets. Christie’s is located at 20 Rockefeller Plaza.
