Husband and wife team Warren Leher, an MFA Design instructor, and Judith Sloan, an oral historian, have recently kicked off their multi-city book and CD tour for Crossing the BLVD: Strangers, Neighbors, Aliens in a New America. The book is a 400-page, four-color exploration of new immigrants and refugees in Queens, New York, the most ethnically diverse locality in the United States. It has recently been honored with the 2003 Archivists Round Table Award for Innovative Use of Archives. On September 24 at 7pm, the duo will read excerpts from their new book at St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery, 131 East 10th Street. There will be special guest performances by Crossing the BLVD musicians: Nigerian gospel singer Kingsley Ogunde, Romanian-American singer Christine Ghezzo and members of the Gypsy-punk-cabaret band Gogol Bordello.
