When she’s not behind a pile of books, working at the Visual Arts Library, one may find Malin Abrahamsson (BFA 1998 Fine Arts) at her first solo exhibition. Abrahamsson’s exhibition Spills will be on view through September 1 at the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art at Snug Harbor Cultural Center in Staten Island.
Abrahamsson, a native of Sweden, was recently honored with the 2003 Fromer Award for the Arts, which is given annually to one artist who lives or works on Staten Island. The recipient receives a stipend as well as the honor of opening the Center’s exhibition season. Inspired by architecture and popular culture, her site-specific installation explores pictorial, mental and physical space with paint applied directly onto the walls of the gallery; and small acrylic paintings on wood.
