Shooting East

May 23, 2003

Alumni Scholarship winner and popular campus photographer Joseph Sywenkyj (BFA 2002 Photography) has recently been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship. The scholarship will allow Sywenkyj to continue his intense photographic project about life in the Ukraine; including work about the spread of tuberculosis and families living with AIDS. Despite the grim subject matter, Sywenkyj focuses on the tender grasp these people have on living instead of on the suffering they endure. He leaves for the Ukraine in the fall for “10 months straight of picture making,” he says. He hopes to broaden his story about the country and perhaps buy a new camera for the first time.
