11-Digit Dialing Starts in New York February 1

January 24, 2003

Beginning February 1 you must dial a “1” plus the three-digit area code, plus the seven-digit number to make all local calls within and between the 212, 347, 646, 718, and 917 area codes–even if you’re dialing another number in the same area code. Please be sure to update your personal phone book and re-program any automatic dialing services or equipment with the 1 + 10-digit dialing pattern–fax machines, Internet service dial-up numbers, alarm systems, speed dialers, Call Forwarding, and pagers.
