Joseph Sywenkyj Ukraine: Verses of Faith and Disease (BFA Photography), November 29 – December 14; Reception: December 3, 5 – 7pm; Visual Arts Gallery, 137 Wooster Street. Mr. Sywenkyj laid the groundwork for this exhibition with his many visits to the Ukraine, where he created work about the spread of tuberculosis. The focus of this show, however, is AIDS and its impact on one family. Despite the grim subject matter, this photographer’s work is not about despair, but rather the vitality and preciousness of life.

disbelief (BFA Fine Art), November 29 – December 14; Reception: December 3, 5 – 7pm; Visual Arts Gallery, 137 Wooster Street. According to curator and SVA faculty member Peter Hristoff, “Artists, especially young artists, are told to believe in themselves and they, in turn, want others to believe in their work . . . The work of the two artists I have chosen, Andres Basurto and Rene Trevino, are equal parts dis and belief.”
