Elegance & Rigor: An Alum’s Towering 9/11 Memorial

September 13, 2002

Elizabeth Morrow MacKenzie (MFA Design 2002) has created an elegant memorial in honor of three Bloomberg employees who died in the World Trade Center last September 11. The piece was just unveiled and is now permanently situated in the lobby at the Bloomberg Press office (499 Park Avenue). The work consists of two openings cut into a marble wall, representing the numeral 11 and the two towers. The openings are covered with flat screen video monitors that show footage of the sky, captured by a web camera. The word “September” is carved into the marble above the openings and the employee’s names– Peter Alderman, William Kelly, and Paul Ortiz–are engraved into the glass of one of the monitors. The names, which are lit with recessed lights and glow in front of the changing sky, are placed on the glass at approximately the level where the Windows on the World restaurant once was, where their 9/11 morning meeting was to be held.
