Tropical Opera

February 8, 2002

Thomas Woodruff, the multi-talented chair of the Illustration and Cartooning Department, is currently in the beautiful state of Hawaii. But he’s not there just to sip island cocktails on the beach, he’s designing the sets and costumes for the Hawaiian Opera Theatre’s production of Salome, opening February 15. In conjunction with the opera, the nearby Contemporary Museum at First Hawaiian Center is showing the exhibition Designing Salome: Set and Costume Designs by Thomas Woodruff through April 23. In addition to working on opera in Hawaii and chairing the department at SVA, Mr. Woodruff’s work recently debuted on television. His illustrations can now be seen as part of a new series of “Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy” on Saturday Night Live.
