‘Round SVA

January 25, 2002

  • It is time for the Animation Dreams VII exhibition which showcases work from second and third year animation students at SVA. There will be a special interactive event called Anijam during the reception on February 4 from 5 to 7pm, which will give the public an opportunity to draw and see their work transformed into animation. Animation Dreams VII will be on view in the SVA Gallery from January 31 through February 13, 2002. (Image by Andy Gonsalves, BFA Animation 2002)

  • The Interior Design Department invites everyone to its early spring Student Exhibition in the SVA Gallery Lobby from January 31 through February 13, 2002 (the reception is also on February 4). The exhibition will present work that transcends traditional interiors work, such as urban planning, architecture, lighting and furniture design.

  • Get your fill of gallery hopping by adding All You Can Eat to your list this week. The Visual Arts Gallery in SoHo at 137 Wooster Street, presents All You Can Eat: Selections from the MFA Fine Arts Special Projects Part 2. Curated by Derek Eller of Derek Eller Gallery, the exhibition will be on view January 25 through February 9, 2002. There will be a reception for the artists on January 29 from 5 to 7 pm.

‘Round SVA

Now on view at the Westside Gallery (141 West 21 Street) is Installations, an exhibition of work from three MFA fine arts students. From Jihyun Park, the viewer will experience large-scale sculptural articulations of verbal puns; On (Megumi) Akiyoshi offers a “lighting jacket” to viewers in order to enter her dark and dizzying room covered in brightly painted floral patterns; and Chong Jenny Son adds a sense of humor to her installation by taking objects traditionally associated with men and manual labor, like tools, and covers them in tightly knitted jackets. Installations will be on view through February 23 with a reception for the artists January 23 from 5 to 7pm.

The Eastside Gallery (214 East 21 Street) is now showing Graphic Design, an exhibition featuring the work of several students (and recent graduates) from the BFA graphic design program. Viewers will peer into experiments with typographic design in the form of books and prints; a collaboration of collage; and work fusing art created on the computer and art created “by hand.” Everyone is encouraged to visit the Eastside Gallery for the Graphic Design exhibition (up through February 20), and attend the reception for the artists on January 24 from 5 to 7pm.
